Methodology FAQ

How to read these results

What does this tool do?

This tool compares premium credit cards against modeled spending profiles built from annual spend, category mix, travel patterns, lifestyle usage, and fee sensitivity to identify the cards that appear most rewarding for each user type.

What goes into the ranking?

The model combines base reward rates, accelerated earning rules, travel value, forex savings, dining and lifestyle benefits, welcome value, milestone value, and fee drag. Preset profiles also carry assumptions on golf usage, hotel spend, meal frequency, portal behavior, and lounge usage.

How is travel and lounge value treated?

Travel value includes modeled lounge usage, golf benefits, hotel discounts, and voucher-style travel value where applicable. Domestic and international lounge visits are valued separately, and realized lounge usage is haircut through a usage probability rather than treated as fully consumed.

How are fees and one-time benefits handled?

Annual fees are adjusted for modeled waiver probability, joining fees are amortised over time, and welcome or milestone benefits are spread across defined periods so the ranking reflects a more normalized annual value rather than a one-off headline offer.

What does effective return mean here?

Effective return is the model’s estimate of annualized net value as a percentage of annual spend after adding rewards and modeled benefit value, then accounting for fees. It is designed as a comparison metric, not a statement of guaranteed realized savings.

Are the table shares the same as actual spend shares?

No. The category shares shown in the comparison table indicate how much each benefit bucket contributes to the modeled return for that card, not the literal share of user spending.

Should these results be treated as exact outcomes?

No. The rankings depend on modeled assumptions and publicly compiled card features, so they should be read as a directional decision aid. Actual realized value can vary depending on redemption behavior, merchant eligibility, benefit access, and issuer rule changes.
